Art From the Heart Update: Only 24 days away!

With Art From the Heart 2009 only about 3 weeks away, staff and students here at the Studio usualy start to really buckle down, gear up, and all other manner of cliched euphamisms for working extra, extra hard. The staff usually also enters PANIC MODE, a state of being that includes constant nervous hysteria that there won't be enough art, no one will come, nothing is organized and we are doomed.

Things feel a little different this year. Who knows why. Maybe it's because we've actually framed a lot of the big pieces already. Or maybe it's because the students have been putting out their stellar work and - dare we say - it's even more stellar than usual? Is that possible?

You can be the judge if you want! Check out these shots of the gallery, which has become a huge art warehouse full of treasures untold...

Here's the gallery from the door. Can you believe the abundance of rare art treasures? And ALL of them will be at the Benefit, available for you to buy on Sunday, July 19th!

City Scene by Herman...already framed!

Piano Scene by Julia...yet ANOTHER framed piece!  WOW! You can already tell if it's going to look good in your living room!

Breadbox by Melvin...I can't think of one single kitchen in the Greater Birmingham Metro area that wouldn't look even better with this on the counter.

Bird Tray by Trish...too nice to actually serve drinks on - we recommend hanging it on the wall.

Plants, plants everywhere and soon we'll have some to eat!

Grant writing is something you never really stop doing when you're a non-profit organization. We have a lot of people and organizations who support us here at the Studio and allow us to do the fun, off-the-wall, out-of-the-box projects we love so much.

Independent Presbyterian Church is a long time supporter of the Studio and the generous grant from their Foundation has allowed us to start a VERY special project with the kids: an organic garden. Not many of the kids have had exposure to gardening, so excitement has been keen among the classes as they've been going outside to dig in the dirt.

Visiting artist Kate Merritt Davis and Director of Children's Programming, Karen Balliet, have been working with the kids and teaching them how to make a garden from top to bottom - or bottom to top, as the case may be.

We started by letting the kids help us dig up a section of land to build a raised garden bed.

This little guy could not have been more thrilled to be using a shovel. When he came back inside, he paused in the doorway and announced, "I am a FARMER, y'all. I dug five digs ALL BY MYSELF."

After the ground had been prepared by clearing away the grass and covering it with newspaper, Kate and her husband Brad Davis built a cedar garden box.

All this week, Kate has come to teach the kids about organic gardening and helping them plant their own personal plants in the garden. She's shown them Black Kow manure (which made everyone laugh) and Bone Meal. Everyone felt it and smelled it. Most of them had never seen fertilizer before, so it was a great experience.

Then everyone got to go out one at a time and plant their own plant. We planted red tomatoes, yellow pear tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelon, beans and flowers.

Everyone got a chance to put their hands in the fertilizer (although Kate gave them the option of not doing it, everyone wanted to do it themselves)!

We watered....

Everyone built a tripod so the tomatoes and beans would have support while growing. Here's Karen helping out. We decided to decorate the tripods with colorful wire so our garden would be bright and beautiful, even before the plants started blooming.

We made every plant a sign and also a "name plate" so we would remember who planted which plant. Every week the kids will check on their plants and water them when they get to the Studio.

Kate promised that soon the kids would be harvesting their food and sampling it. "We're going to have a Thanksgiving feast," one of the kids remarked.

If you're in Irondale any time soon, don't steal anything from our garden!
